Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, confirmed the incident in a statement released hours after the tragedy, describing it as a heartbreaking day for the state. He expressed his condolences to the grieving families.

“Earlier today, an incident occurred at Islamic High School, Basorun, where a family-oriented event was being held. Unfortunately, a stampede at the venue led to multiple deaths and injuries,” the governor said.

“This is a very sad day for us in Oyo State. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to parents whose joy has been turned into mourning by this tragic event.”

Governor Makinde assured residents that immediate measures had been taken to prevent further loss of life, including the deployment of security personnel to restore order at the venue. Medical teams and ambulances were also dispatched to provide urgent care to the injured.

He added that the event’s organisers had been detained and would face prosecution. “While investigations are ongoing, those responsible for this tragedy have been taken into custody. I want to assure the public that anyone involved, directly or indirectly, will be held accountable. Please remain calm as security agencies investigate this incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families affected. May the souls of the departed rest in peace.”

Dotun Oyelade, the state’s Commissioner for Information and Orientation, confirmed that victims were being treated at various hospitals across Ibadan. He urged concerned parents to visit these facilities with valid identification to check on their children.

The listed hospitals include Patnas Hospital, Basorun; Western Hospital, Basorun; Ringroad State Hospital; Molly Specialist Hospital; and the University College Hospital (UCH).
