How New Pope Would Emerge

This sacred process is overseen by the College of Cardinals, made up of senior bishops and top-ranking church officials. Only cardinals under the age of 80 are eligible to vote in the election.

The cardinals will convene in Rome and enter into a secret conclave, held inside the iconic Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. Once inside, they are completely sealed off from the outside world, and are bound by an oath of absolute secrecy.

Voting is conducted through secret ballot, and each cardinal writes down the name of their chosen candidate. A two-thirds majority is required for a new pope to emerge.

Here are the steps involved in electing a new Pope:

  1. Death of the Pope
    – Official announcement is made.
    – Preparations for the funeral and mourning period begin.
  2. Summoning the College of Cardinals
    – All eligible cardinals (under 80 years old) are called to Rome.
  3. General Congregations Begin
    – Cardinals meet to discuss the state of the Church and preparations for the conclave.
  4. Conclave Begins
    – Cardinals enter the Sistine Chapel.
    – They take an oath of secrecy and are locked in until a new pope is elected.
  5. Voting Process
    – Secret ballots are cast.
    – A two-thirds majority is needed to elect a pope.
  6. Burning of Ballots
    – Ballots are burned after each voting round.
    – Black smoke: No pope elected.
    – White smoke: A new pope has been chosen.
  7. Acceptance by the Elected Cardinal
    – The chosen candidate is asked if he accepts the papacy.
    – If yes, he selects a papal name.
  8. Dressing of the New Pope
    – The new pope is clothed in papal vestments (white robe and skullcap).
  9. Public Announcement
    – The senior cardinal announces “Habemus Papam” (“We have a Pope”) from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica.
  10. First Appearance and Blessing
    – The new pope appears on the balcony.
    – He gives his first Urbi et Orbi blessing (to the city and the world).

The new pope is then dressed in papal garments and introduced to the world from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, where he delivers his first blessing as the spiritual leader of the Catholic Church.

This highly confidential and symbolic process is designed to preserve the integrity of the election and ensure that the Church is guided by divine wisdom in selecting its new leader.
