How “hit-and-run” driver kills Lagos director four days before retirement

It was learnt that Talabi, who was the Director of Procurement at the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASSRA), was knocked down by a speeding vehicle on Saturday while crossing the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway near the Redemption Camp in Ogun State.

A source in the state civil service, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the late director was rushed to the hospital but was confirmed dead on arrival.

“She was knocked down by a hit-and-run driver while trying to cross the expressway around the Redemption Camp. Efforts were made to rescue her, but she was confirmed dead at the hospital,” the source said.

Another source in the agency disclosed that Talabi was due for retirement on October 13, but her send-off ceremony was rescheduled to October 22 to allow the agency’s General Manager to attend.

“She had already printed invitation cards for the event, which was to serve as both her retirement and 60th birthday celebration,” the source said.

The invitation card, which has been circulating on social media, indicated that the event was billed to hold at the NERDC Conference Centre, Ikeja, adjacent to the Fela Shrine.

Meanwhile, the family has released details of the burial arrangements. According to the programme, a wake will be held on October 23, while the funeral service will take place on October 24, 2025, both at 10 Ore-Ofe Street, Ara Hall Bus Stop, Ibafo, Ogun State.

Efforts to reach the spokesperson of LASSRA, Mrs. Basirat Lawal, for comments were unsuccessful as calls and messages to her phone were not responded to.

Similarly, attempts to reach the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Omolola Odutola, were unsuccessful as she did not answer calls or reply to text messages sent to her.

Talabi’s death adds to the rising cases of fatal hit-and-run incidents involving pedestrians along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway and other highways linking Lagos and Ogun states.
