
The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the tragic death of Inspector Okolie Amechi, who was accidentally shot by his 10-year-old son on Sunday evening in Awka.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the child unintentionally pulled the trigger of an AK-47 rifle assigned to the officer, striking him in the back. A second child was also injured, sustaining a gunshot wound to the hand from the same accidental discharge.
“The son, unaware of the state of the AK-47 rifle, pulled the trigger and struck the inspector in the back and his second child in the hand,” Ikenga stated.
Inspector Amechi was rushed to the hospital where he was confirmed dead. The injured child is said to be responding to treatment, and the rifle has been recovered.
The Command expressed deep sadness over the incident and extended condolences to the family of the late officer, while also wishing the injured child a speedy recovery.
The police have not yet confirmed whether further investigations will lead to charges or disciplinary actions regarding the handling of the firearm within the home.
