The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has assured Nigerians that the 10th National Assembly will ensure the speedy passage of the constitutional amendment bill.
Abbas gave the assurance at the National Public Hearing on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, held in Abuja.
He noted that unlike previous assemblies where attempts to amend the constitution were unsuccessful, the House under his leadership is committed to delivering a credible reform process.
“As Speaker, I pledge that we will take your contributions seriously and consider the bills with diligence, fairness, and urgency,” Abbas said.
“We will engage the State Assemblies respectfully and transparently to secure their concurrence. We will also continue to work with the executive and with you, the people, to ensure that the amendment process proceeds smoothly.”
The Speaker commended Nigerians who participated in the hearing, stressing that the process would impact positively on all sectors of society.
Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who also chairs the House Committee on Constitutional Amendment, promised that the exercise would be all-inclusive and reflective of the aspirations of Nigerians.
In his remarks, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, hailed the committee for creating an inclusive platform that engages citizens, civil society, political parties, professional groups, and traditional institutions.
Akume reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and supporting the amendment process to deepen good governance.
