House of Rep. Deputy Chief Whip Dies at 60

In a statement, the House spokesperson, Akintunde Rotimi, confirmed that the Ogun lawmaker passed away on Wednesday, January 15, following a brief illness.

Born on December 2, 1965, Onanuga was first elected to the House in 2019 under the All Progressives Congress (APC) and was re-elected in 2023. During her tenure, she served as the chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development in the 9th Assembly, where she advocated for policies to empower women and promote social welfare.

Rotimi noted, “She was appointed Deputy Chief Whip of the 10th Assembly, a position in which she demonstrated outstanding leadership and a steadfast commitment to legislative discipline, especially during parliamentary sittings.”

Described as a dedicated public servant, visionary leader, and passionate advocate for her constituents, Onanuga was affectionately known as ‘Ijaya.’ Her colleagues and constituents admired her for her intellect, passion, humility, and commitment to excellence. Her contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape were driven by her determination to create a better society.

The House extended its condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, the government and people of Ogun State, particularly her constituents, and the entire National Assembly.

“We mourn the loss of this vibrant and dedicated lawmaker, whose life was devoted to improving the lives of Nigerians, especially her constituents. Her legacy of service will continue to inspire future generations.”

Funeral arrangements will be announced by her family in due course.
