Govt Suspends Popular Monarch Over Alleged Partisan Political Activities

The decision was communicated in a letter dated October 20, 2026, and signed by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ganiyu Hamzat. The suspension, which took immediate effect, was approved by the State Executive Council under Section 52(1) of the Ogun State Obas and Chiefs Law, 2021.

According to the letter, the government acted after receiving several complaints about the monarch’s conduct, particularly allegations that he had engaged in open political activities, some of which were reportedly publicised by him.

The state government maintained that traditional rulers were expected to remain within the boundaries of their customary responsibilities and avoid partisan political activities. It warned that involvement in party politics could affect the standing of traditional institutions and threaten peaceful relations among people with different political views.

Officials said the suspension was intended to preserve peace, order and good governance in Iselu Kingdom and Ogun State while the allegations were examined. The action is pending a detailed investigation, and the allegations have not been established as proven misconduct.

As part of the restrictions imposed, Oba Akinyemi has been directed to vacate the palace and stay away from the premises throughout the suspension period.

The monarch has also been instructed not to present himself as, or claim recognition as, the Eselu of Iselu Kingdom while the suspension remains in force.

In addition, the government prohibited him from wearing or using items associated with the office of an Oba during the period. These include a beaded or other crown, ileke, a beaded staff, irukere and other traditional royal insignia.

The letter further directed the suspended monarch to make himself available whenever the state government convenes a meeting or sitting to investigate the allegations against him.

Copies of the suspension letter were sent to the Secretary of Yewa North Local Government and the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, for their information and necessary action.

The investigation is expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the complaints and establish whether the alleged conduct violated the provisions of the state’s law governing traditional institutions.

No conclusion on the allegations was contained in the information provided in the suspension letter, and the government’s next steps will depend on the outcome of its investigation.
