Governor Makinde Appoints New Alaafin of Oyo

The announcement was made on Friday by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade.

According to Oyelade, Owoade’s selection followed extensive consultations and traditional divinations conducted by the Oyomesi, the Oyo kingmakers.

“Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade, after thorough consultations and divinations, has been recommended by the Oyomesi and approved by Governor Seyi Makinde as the new Alaafin of Oyo,” the statement read.

Resolution of Disputes

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ademola Ojo, noted that the announcement puts an end to the legal and social controversies that followed the death of the former Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, who passed away on April 22, 2022.

“This decision has put to rest all the socio-legal controversies that have arisen since the transition of the late Oba Adeyemi. We urge the people of Oyo State to support the new Alaafin and join the government in celebrating this historic moment,” Ojo stated.

Calls for Unity

Oyelade expressed optimism that the reign of Prince Owoade would bring peace, unity, and prosperity to the Oyo Kingdom.

“We pray that his reign brings progress and harmony to the people of Oyo and strengthens the historic legacy of the Alaafin institution,” he added.

Residents of Oyo State were urged to rally behind the new monarch as he begins his reign over the ancient kingdom.

Ongoing Controversies

Despite the announcement, the selection process for the new Alaafin has not been without contention. Five prominent kingmakers, including the Basorun of Oyo, High Chief Yusuf Akinade, rejected the governor’s directive for a fresh selection process, insisting that Prince Lukman Gbadegesin was already the Alaafin-elect.

The kingmakers’ legal counsel, Adekunle Sobaloju, described Governor Makinde’s actions as illegal, citing ongoing legal proceedings. The group urged the governor to suspend further actions until the court resolves the matter.

The selection of Prince Owoade is expected to bring a new chapter to the Alaafin institution, but lingering disputes may shape the early days of his reign.
