Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has called on the Awujale Chiefs in Council to ensure fairness, unity and transparency in the process of selecting a new Awujale of Ijebuland.
The stool became vacant following the death of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who joined his ancestors on July 13, 2025, at the age of 91 after a remarkable reign of more than 65 years.
Speaking in Iperu after a meeting with members of the Awujale Chiefs in Council, Governor Abiodun stressed the need to conclude the process without delay.
“Nature abhors a vacuum, and the process of installing another Awujale has started. That was what we discussed. The pathway to a regency is to ensure that all the i’s are dotted and t’s crossed, and that every process enshrined in the Laws of Ijebuland is strictly followed,” the governor said.
He assured that his administration would support any candidate endorsed by the kingmakers, provided the process remains transparent and in line with tradition.
“I must say that all of us agreed that we are on the same page, and this should put an end to all the rumours flying around,” he added.
Governor Abiodun also expressed optimism that the succession process would be peaceful and devoid of rancour, urging that all contenders be given equal opportunity.
He commended the Awujale Council for maintaining peace and unity during and after the reign of the late monarch.
“I had to wait for the 40 days mourning period before calling this meeting. What is most important is that the chiefs remain deeply committed and dedicated to Ijebuland, and I appreciate them.
“This is my first meeting with them since the passing of our revered monarch, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, to commiserate with them and also assure them of my confidence in their ability to carry out this responsibility without division. The Council is intact, working in harmony, and I am pleased with their commitment,” he stated.
In his remarks, the Olootu Olowa and Deputy Chairman of the Council, Chief Oluwaranti Lekan Osifeso, reaffirmed the unity of the Awujale Chiefs, stressing their resolve to preserve peace and progress in Ijebuland.
