President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has written to the Senate, requesting confirmation of five nominees as Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday, Tinubu cited Section 154(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which mandates Senate approval for such appointments.
The nominees are:
Umar Yusuf Garba (Kano)
Saad Umar (Bauchi)
Chukwuemeka C. Ibeziako (Anambra)
Mohammad I. Ngoshe (Borno)
Dr. Owede Kosioma Eli (Bayelsa)
The president expressed confidence in the Senate’s swift consideration and confirmation of the nominees.
In a separate request, Tinubu also sought Senate approval for Nwakuche Sylvester Ndidi as the Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), in line with Section 3(1)(b) of the NCoS Act, 2019.
The request has been referred to the Senate Committee on Interior, which is expected to report back within a week.
