The Senate has officially removed three Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) following a request from President Bola Tinubu, invoking Section 157(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
The affected officials are Dr. Nura Ali (Sokoto), Barr. Hudu Yunusa Ari (Adamawa), and Prof. Ikemefuna Chijioke Uzochukwu (Abia), who were suspended in 2023 over allegations of electoral malpractice, including election fraud, compromise, and dereliction of duty.
Security reports revealed that Dr. Ali was indicted for allegedly compromising the 2023 elections and accepting a $150,000 bribe.
Barr. Ari was suspended by former President Muhammadu Buhari after unlawfully declaring a governorship election result.
Prof. Uzochukwu was found guilty of mismanaging election logistics and failing to reschedule supplementary elections.
With a two-thirds majority vote, the Senate endorsed their dismissal and directed the Clerk to formally notify President Tinubu for implementation.
