Barely two months after newly elected council officials were sworn into office across Lagos State, four female officers have died in separate circumstances, sparking shock and concern across the political space.
The officials, who passed on between August and September 2025, were all inaugurated on July 27, 2025.
The deceased are:
Oluwakemi Rufai, Councillor, Ward C, Ibeju-Lekki — died on August 13, 17 days after inauguration. She was the only woman in the council’s legislative arm and reportedly died after a brief illness.
Zainab Shotayo, Councillor, Ward C3, Odiolowo-Ojuwoye LCDA — died on August 18, just 22 days into office. Shotayo, who served as Chief Whip of the 6th Legislative Arm, was also the only female councillor in her council.
Princess Oluremi Nutayi Ajose, Vice Chairman, Badagry West LCDA — died on September 20, barely 55 days in office. She was the daughter of His Royal Majesty, Oba Oyekan Possi Ajose, the Alapa of Apa Egun-Awori Kingdom.
Basirat Oluwakemi Mayabikan, Councillor, Ward F, Shomolu — died on September 21, 56 days after inauguration. She was among the lawmakers of the 10th Legislative Arm of Shomolu Council.
The string of deaths has unsettled many residents, but the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has cautioned against linking the incidents to politics.
APC spokesperson, Seye Oladejo, described insinuations of foul play as “unfounded and insensitive,” urging the public to avoid spreading misinformation.
He stressed that the ruling party had consistently prioritised the inclusion of women in political leadership across the state and would continue to uphold that commitment despite the tragic losses.
