The Federal Government has imposed a one-year moratorium on new applications for polytechnics and monotechnics, with an exemption for health institutions due to low enrollment.
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, approved the suspension, which takes immediate effect, according to a statement by the Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Prof. Idris Bugaje, on Thursday in Kaduna.
Bugaje explained that institutions currently under assessment must pay specified fees to continue their registration.
Polytechnics awaiting ministerial approval will pay an application fee of N4 million and a processing fee of N2 million per programme, while monotechnics will pay N2 million for applications and N1 million per programme.
Applicants have 30 days to make payments, failing which their registration process will be terminated.
New health institutions, despite being exempted from the moratorium, will follow the same fee structure as monotechnics.
The policy aims to ensure that Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions operate within their approved capacities for improved quality and efficiency.
