The Federal Ministry of Environment’s National Flood Early Warning Centre has placed nine Northern states on red alert over possible flooding between August 25 and 29, 2025.
In a circular signed by Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, the Centre warned that heavy rainfall could trigger flooding in several settlements across the region.
The states listed include Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, Borno, and Adamawa. Stakeholders in the affected areas were urged to remain vigilant and promptly report any incidents.
“Certain northern settlements are likely to experience heavy rainfall that may lead to flooding within the period August 25 to 29, 2025,” the circular stated. “We call on relevant stakeholders on the Centre’s platform to give feedback of any emerging situation in their various states.”
Adamawa and Katsina were flagged as most at risk, with towns such as Mubi, Shelleng, and Abba-Kumbo in Adamawa, and Katsina town, Kaita, and Bindawa in Katsina placed under watch.
Other vulnerable locations include Gwaram (Jigawa), Nafada (Gombe), Ngala (Borno), Sumaila (Kano), Anka (Zamfara), and Makira (Sokoto). In Bauchi State, the Centre listed Azare and Jama’are as towns under close monitoring.
The warning comes just weeks after the Centre issued a similar alert across seven Northern states, cautioning communities along the floodplains of the River Niger to evacuate due to rising water levels.
