FG Inaugurates Committee to Reform NYSC Scheme

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony in Abuja, the Minister of Youth Development, Hon. Ayodele Olawande, said the committee is expected to evaluate the current operations of the NYSC and recommend reforms that would make it more responsive to national development goals.

Olawande described the NYSC as a vital instrument for promoting unity and national integration over the years, offering young Nigerians opportunities to interact with diverse cultures and gain real-life experiences across the country.

While acknowledging the achievements of the scheme, the Minister also highlighted some of its major challenges. These include the safety and welfare of corps members, poor infrastructure, and concerns over the relevance of the programme in the face of Nigeria’s changing socio-economic realities.

“Our target is to reposition the NYSC to become more secure, innovative, and impactful,” Olawande said.

He stressed that the reformed scheme should provide greater opportunities for skill development, entrepreneurship, civic responsibility, and career growth for Nigerian youths.

The Minister expressed confidence in the capacity of the committee members to deliver on the assignment, urging them to approach the task with patriotism, integrity, and bold ideas. He also assured them of the Ministry’s full support, including policy guidance and necessary backing to implement their recommendations.

According to him, the inauguration of the committee marks a critical step towards revitalising one of Nigeria’s most important institutions for youth development and national cohesion.

Olawande appreciated the presence and support of key stakeholders, including the Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa; the Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination, Hajia Hadiza Bala Usman; representatives of the NYSC Directorate, and others who are part of the reform efforts.
