The Federal Government has assured that the ongoing dualisation of the Akure-Ita Ogbolu-Iju-Ikere road will be completed and inaugurated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in December this year.
This assurance was given by the Federal Controller of Works in Ondo State, Engr. Olajide Hussein, during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Akure on Sunday.
According to Hussein, the Phase One of the project covers a 15-kilometre stretch and is expected to be ready before the end of the year. He disclosed that the first phase is being executed at the cost of N19 billion, while the second phase is projected to cost N23 billion.
He explained that the Ministry of Works adopts a phased approach to road construction to allow motorists access to one lane while work progresses on the other.
“Phase One includes a 15km single carriageway from Akure to the Ekiti State boundary, though the total distance from Akure to Ikere is 18.438km,” he said.
Hussein noted that although Phase One officially covers only 15km, efforts are being made to complete the entire 18km stretch by December to ensure seamless movement for road users.
He commended the Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, for his commitment towards ensuring the project is delivered on time, describing his efforts as tireless.
On challenges encountered during the project, Hussein identified building obstructions — both temporary and permanent — as major issues. However, he appreciated property owners for cooperating with the government and removing the affected structures in conjunction with the state authorities.
He also praised the contractor handling the project for maintaining high-quality standards throughout the construction process.
