A Nigerian family has formally petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, over the alleged abduction and extortion of their son, Segun Okunbajo, who is based abroad.
According to the petition filed by Prof. Yemi Oke, SAN, on behalf of Mr. Okubajo Kehinde, Segun was forcibly taken from Lagos to Abuja on October 9, 2024, by four police officers, held incommunicado, and allegedly extorted of N151.5 million.
The family claims Segun was arrested without any complaint against him, his phones and CCTV system were seized, and he was detained in leg chains at the Force CID office in Abuja. The petition further accuses two alleged informants, Oladipo Ibrahim and Shedrach Luka, of colluding with the officers to frame and extort the victim.
Initially demanding N1 billion, the officers allegedly settled for N151.5 million after intense pressure. The family says they were forced to raise the money through loans and personal contributions.
Since the incident, Segun has fled the country and is reportedly facing ongoing threats from the officers involved, aimed at preventing the family from seeking justice.
The petition, backed by “documents, videos, and pictures,” demands:
A full investigation into the incident,
Refund of the extorted sum, and
Disciplinary action against the implicated officers.
The lawyers warned that if no action is taken within 14 days, they will escalate the matter to the Presidency, international bodies, and initiate legal proceedings.
Police spokesperson ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, when contacted, said he would verify with the DIG whether the petition has been received.
