Wives of former African presidents have expressed frustration over systemic neglect and social obscurity they face after their husbands leave office or pass away. They lamented being stripped of resources and dignity, relegated to irrelevance despite their contributions to national development.
The ex-first ladies voiced their concerns during a conference in Conakry, Guinea, aimed at establishing a united Former Presidents’ Wives Coalition to address these challenges.
A Call for Recognition and Change
André Touré, widow of Guinea’s late President Sékou Touré, championed the coalition’s cause, describing it as a platform to restore the dignity of former presidents’ wives.
“The coalition challenges the stigma and neglect faced by former presidents’ wives, advocating for their dignity and respect in society,” Touré stated. She highlighted plans to establish a museum dedicated to preserving their legacies, ensuring their contributions are remembered and honored.
The coalition’s vision is shared by other former first ladies, including Fatmata Momoh of Sierra Leone and Isabel Vieira of Guinea-Bissau.
Shared Struggles and a Commitment to Change
Touré and her peers recounted shared experiences of abandonment and loss, emphasizing the systemic nature of the issue. “We are not just figures from the past. We played significant roles in our nations’ histories and deserve recognition,” Touré said.
The struggles of the widow of Liberia’s late President Samuel Kedo were also highlighted at the conference. She noted that previous coalition efforts dwindled due to lack of sustained support but reaffirmed the renewed commitment of members to empower one another and advocate for their rights.
Coalition’s Plans and Appeal for Support
As part of their efforts, the coalition announced plans to tour various African nations to engage other former presidents’ wives and secure support from international partners.
“The mission extends beyond advocacy,” Touré explained. “We call on governments, international organizations, and civil society to acknowledge the vital roles these women played and to support initiatives that ensure their dignity and equitable treatment.”
The coalition aims to reshape the narrative surrounding women in leadership and ensure that the sacrifices and contributions of former presidents’ wives are celebrated and preserved for future generations.
