The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ekiti State Council has vehemently frowned at the usual exorbitant electricity bills by the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), seeking urgent intervention of the relevant authorities.
This was contained in a communique issued at the end of the October Congress of the Union, held on Wednesday at the NUJ Secretariat, Ado-Ekiti as signed by its Secretary, O’Seun Ogunsakin.
The Congress urged the Ekiti State Government to look into the exorbitant and outrageous billing by the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), including the hike in house rent by the real Estate Agents in Ado-Ekiti, the State capital, stressing that these have worsened the living conditions of residents.
The Congress equally appealed to the State Government, to urgently recruit more hands to ease the workload of staff of the State-owned media station, Broadcasting Service of Ekiti State (BSES), and procure state-of-the-art equipment in the newsroom to make news production and editing easier.
The union noted that some staff in the newsroom of the station have been redeployed. While some had left the service for greener pastures, causing the remaining few staff to overwork with little or no time at all to rest and take care of their families of.
The Communique further reads: “That the Federal Government should as a matter of urgency mobilize the contractor handling the newly awarded Ado-Ikare road to site to ease the traffic gridlock caused by the dilapidated road which is now becoming a death trap for commuters.
“That aggrieved members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) who are in court regarding the forthcoming National Delegate Conference should please withdraw their cases in the interest of peace and unity, and settle their grievances out of court.
“That the congress felicitates with the Governor of Ekiti State, Mr Biodun Oyebanji on the successes recorded by his administration in the last two years of his governance, urging him not to relent in fulfilling his promises of shared promised agenda to Ekiti people.”
