EKITI 2026: Why Chief Monisade Afuye Deserves To Run Again With Governor Biodun Oyebanji

In Nigeria’s political landscape, a peaceful working relationship between governors and their deputies is often a rarity. Across several states, we have witnessed the destructive fallout of discord at the top. One recalls the rift between former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki and his Deputy, Philip Shaibu, which culminated in Shaibu’s impeachment.

A similar scenario played out in Oyo State during Governor Seyi Makinde’s first term, leading to the removal of his deputy.

In Ondo State, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s first-term dispute with his Deputy, Chief Ali Olanusi, led to the deputy’s impeachment. Even during Akeredolu’s second term, it took the intervention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to prevent the impeachment of Deputy Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa before the governor’s unfortunate passing.

These crises have destabilized governance, triggered political tension, and stalled progress in many states. But Ekiti State stands as a refreshing exception, thanks to the cordial and productive relationship between Governor Oyebanji and Chief Afuye. Their mutual respect and alignment with the All Progressives Congress (APC) structure have created a climate of stability that allows governance to thrive.

Chief Monisade Afuye has distinguished herself through her dedication to the governor’s agenda and respect for party hierarchy. Unlike many deputy governors who seek personal political gain, Afuye has remained focused on service delivery and loyalty to the administration. Her performance has drawn admiration from party stakeholders and the general public alike.

One of her notable areas of strength is in handling chieftaincy and community affairs. Chief Afuye has successfully resolved multiple disputes between traditional rulers and chiefs across Ekiti communities – situations that could have escalated into full-blown crises.

She has also managed sensitive boundary issues between Ekiti communities and those of neighboring states with tact and diplomacy, preserving peace and preventing violence. The recent killings in Osun State over land disputes further highlight the importance of proactive, peace-oriented leadership—something Ekiti has enjoyed under Afuye’s watch.

Her compassion is another quality that sets her apart. Without fanfare or political bias, Chief Afuye continues to support citizens through philanthropic gestures like paying school fees, supporting small businesses, and assisting the less privileged. Her generosity transcends party lines, earning her deep respect and acceptance, especially in her hometown of Ikere-Ekiti. Her political value and grassroots appeal will be instrumental in ensuring a smooth re-election campaign.

At a time when other states are grappling with political instability, Ekiti has enjoyed a peaceful and productive administration due to the synergy between Governor Oyebanji and Chief Afuye. Changing a winning team midway would not only be unnecessary but potentially disruptive.

Chief Monisade Afuye has proven herself loyal, capable, and effective. For the sake of continuity, stability, and sustained development in Ekiti State, she deserves to continue as Deputy Governor beyond 2026—alongside her boss, Governor Oyebanji.
