The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Olayemi Cardoso, has appealed to Nigerians, particularly the youth, to resist the urge to emigrate, assuring them of ongoing efforts to create a thriving economy for all.
Cardoso made the appeal during his keynote address at the 59th Annual Bankers Dinner hosted by the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) in Lagos.
The Apex bank boss emphasized the importance of collective effort in addressing the country’s challenges and capitalizing on its opportunities.
“It is not advisable to leave the country at this stage,” Cardoso said. “Those who choose to sell their assets to emigrate often do so at undervalued prices, allowing opportunistic buyers to profit when the economy rebounds. More importantly, we need all hands on deck to be part of the solution.”
Highlighting the opportunities in Nigeria’s economy, Cardosso pointed to increased market interest over the past year and recent months, suggesting a positive outlook.
He acknowledged the hardships caused by ongoing reforms but stressed that these measures are designed to address current challenges and secure future opportunities. He reiterated the CBN’s commitment to building an economy where individuals and businesses can thrive.
“We understand the difficulties, but our focus remains on creating a resilient economy that benefits all Nigerians,” he said.
