A Magistrate Court sitting in Kano has sentenced a well-known TikTok content creator, Abubakar Usman Kilina, to one year in prison for promoting indecent behaviour and featuring cross-dressers in one of his social media videos.
The judgment was delivered by Magistrate Hadiza Muhammad Hassan of Court No. 21, following Kilina’s conviction on charges bordering on immorality and use of vulgar language online.
The case was filed against him by the Kano State Film Censorship Board, which accused him of violating public decency laws through his online content.
However, the court gave Kilina an option of paying a ₦100,000 fine in place of the prison sentence. He was also ordered to pay a ₦30,000 compensation to the Film Censorship Board for what the court termed “wasting the agency’s time.”
In her ruling, Magistrate Hadiza warned Kilina against engaging in such acts again, stressing that any future violation would attract a stricter penalty without the option of a fine.
The judgment has sparked renewed debate on social media regulation and moral standards in the state, where authorities continue to clamp down on what they consider offensive or culturally inappropriate content.
