Nigerian corps members have expressed frustration over the Federal Government’s delay in implementing the new monthly allowance of N77,000, announced in September 2023.
Many say the delay reflects the government’s disregard for the welfare of youths serving the nation under the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
In September, the NYSC revealed plans to increase the allowance from N33,000 to N77,000, effective July 2024.
The announcement, made via a statement signed by the NYSC’s Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, referenced a directive issued by the Chairman of the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, Mr. Ekpo Nta.
Despite this, corps members reported receiving the old allowance of N33,000 in recent payments, leaving many disillusioned.
Laolu, a corps member in Kwara State, voiced frustration over the lack of clarity: “If they can’t pay now, why announce it? It’s unfair to raise our hopes only to let us down. We are part of the government’s responsibility.”
Similarly, Damilola, serving in Kebbi State, expressed skepticism: “Trust this government at your own risk. If they pay that amount before my Passing Out Parade, I’ll be shocked.”
Idris, a corps member serving in Abuja, highlighted the financial strain caused by the current allowance: “They paid us N33,000 yesterday again. Serving in Abuja, that amount doesn’t even cover transportation, let alone other expenses. How are we supposed to survive?”
The delay has fueled calls for transparency and prompt action from the government to address the concerns of corps members, who are pivotal to the NYSC’s mission of national service and integration. Many have urged the Federal Government to either fulfill its commitment or provide clear communication on when the new allowance will be implemented.
