The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is currently reviewing applications from 110 political associations seeking official registration, but a growing controversy has emerged as two of the groups share the same acronym — ADA.
The identical acronyms have triggered concerns within political circles, especially as Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general elections.
One of the groups, All Democratic Alliance (ADA), is reportedly backed by Chief Akin Ricketts and is widely believed to be part of a broader anti-Tinubu coalition ahead of the next election cycle. INEC listed this group as number 109 on its register of pending political associations.
Right next on the list, at number 110, is Advanced Democratic Alliance (ADA), with Alhaji Ahmadu Suleiman named as its protem chairman and Zipporah Pius Miracles as secretary.
Although they share the same abbreviation, both organisations differ in leadership and location. Ricketts’ ADA operates from the UAC Complex on Samuel Ademulegun Street, Central Business District, Abuja. On the other hand, Suleiman’s ADA has its headquarters on Frandriance Close, off Aminu Kano Crescent, Wuse 2, Abuja.
The similarity in acronyms is raising questions about identity conflicts and potential voter confusion. Stakeholders are urging INEC to ensure clarity and proper distinction during its vetting process to avoid misrepresentation in future electoral activities.
As the commission continues its screening, observers say the case of the two ADAs underscores the urgent need for reforms in party registration processes to avoid duplication and ensure transparency in Nigeria’s democratic system.
