Commissioner Resigns After Indictment Over ‘Drug Baron’ Case Bail

The resignation came shortly after the Abba Kabir Yusuf-led administration received the findings of a panel it constituted to investigate Namadi’s role in the controversial bail of the suspect, Sulaiman Danwawu, currently facing narcotics-related charges.

In a resignation letter made public on Tuesday, Namadi said his decision was driven by public interest and the need to uphold the administration’s values on integrity and anti-drug advocacy.

“As a member of an administration that has consistently championed the fight against the sale and consumption of illicit drugs, it behoves me to take this step — painful as it may be,” the letter reads.

While maintaining his innocence, Namadi said he could not ignore the weight of public perception.

“I remain loyal to the ideals that brought this administration into office. I must strive to protect, preserve, and uphold the trust and vision we have worked so hard to instil in our dear state,” he stated.

Panel Indicts Namadi for Lapses in Bail Procedure

In a statement on Wednesday, the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, said the panel found that the commissioner applied to serve as surety for the suspect on July 18, swearing an affidavit in court as a serving commissioner and pledging to comply with bail conditions.

The panel’s report noted that although Namadi met the technical requirement to serve as surety — being a member of the State Executive Council — he failed to exercise due diligence.

“The Committee found that he had both constructive and actual knowledge of the drug-related nature of the charges,” the report stated.

“He was aware of the Kano State Government’s firm stance against drug trafficking, abuse, youth criminality, and related vices.”

The committee found no evidence of prior acquaintance between Namadi and the suspect, and also confirmed that no financial transaction, including the alleged N5 million bail bond, was made by the commissioner. That figure, the panel said, was only mentioned in the suspect’s affidavit.

Governor Yusuf Reiterates Zero Tolerance on Drug Crimes

Receiving the report, Governor Abba Yusuf reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to maintain transparency, justice, and discipline in public service.

“We are committed to fighting all forms of social misconduct, particularly those endangering the lives of our youths,” the governor said.

He commended the committee for a thorough investigation and assured that his government remains focused on accountability and upholding public trust.
