CLIMATE CHANGE: Former Poly Rector Calls For Construction Of Green Buildings In Tertiary Institutions

The immediate past Rector of  Federal Polytechnic Ado-Ekiti, Dr Dayo Oladebeye has called for construction of sustainable infrastructures across tertiary institutions in Nigeria to address climate change threats.

Dr Oladebeye made the call recently while speaking at the Annual Public Lecture of Directorate of Physical Planning, Federal Polytechnic, Ile-Oluji, Ondo State.

The Mechanical Engineer who is now an Associate Professor at Olomilua University of Education, Ikere-Ekiti, said construction of sustainable infrastructures would reduce impacts of greenhouse gas emissions, promote renewable energy and improve resilience to climate change.

He therefore implored government and school managements to construct green buildings with efficient-energy structure and water/waste management; usage of fossil fuel-powered vehicles, waste water treatment and urban green spaces for recreational activities.

The academic also recommended the development of sustainable infrastructural plan, integration of sustainability into curriculum, provision of professional development and mentorship for students to embrace sustainability  initiatives through clubs, organizations and projects. 

Earlier in his remarks, the Director of Physical Planning, Federal Polytechnic, Ile-Oluji, QS Oyetunde Oyelola, made case for employment of architects and provision of computers with relevant softwares to help them in project supervision and implementation.

QS Oyelola noted that his Directorate has been developing smart building by harnessing future technology without distorting the functionality and aesthetic of the facilities.

He appreciated the Polytechnic Rector and other Principal Officers for providing enabling environment to actualize the Master plan designed since inception.

The Rector Federal Polytechnic Ile-Oluji, Dr. A.I Ebeloku, Rector Federal Polytechnic Ayede, Oyo State, Dr. Taofeeq Adekunle Abdulhameed, Deputy Rectors and other Principal Officers of host institution, Director of Physical Planning Federal Polytechnic Ayede and others attended the 7th Public Lecture held at the Twin Auditorium.
