Candidates Protest PDP’s Withdrawal from Ondo LG Elections

The PDP announced its withdrawal on Thursday, citing a lack of confidence in the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC). In a statement, the party’s Director of Media and Publicity, Leye Igbabo, said, “Our party fielded 15 chairmanship candidates and 131 councillorship candidates. However, ODIEC’s credibility, transparency, and impartiality have failed the integrity test.”

He added, “Observations and reports reveal a troubling pattern of double standards by ODIEC, raising doubts about its ability to conduct a credible election. To uphold the integrity of our party, we have resolved to withdraw our participation.”

Candidates Criticize PDP Leadership

Reacting to the withdrawal, Tuyi Adelami, PDP’s chairmanship candidate for Akure South Local Government Area, alongside councillorship candidates in the council, condemned the party’s decision, calling it an infringement on their rights.

Adelami stated, “We were prepared for the elections, having printed posters, held meetings, and engaged in community campaigns. The state chairman, Bakita Bello, assured us of the party’s participation, but a letter withdrawing from the election was sent to ODIEC without consulting us. This decision is a betrayal of our efforts and the trust of our supporters.”

He further lamented the financial and emotional investments made by the candidates, emphasizing that the withdrawal undermined their strong chance of success, as they had gained substantial support from the electorate.

APC and ODIEC React

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) dismissed the PDP’s withdrawal as an indication of its lack of confidence in competing in a credible election. APC’s Director of Media and Publicity, Steve Otaloro, said, “This is consistent with their recent behaviour. The APC remains committed to the electoral process and confident of victory.”

Meanwhile, ODIEC Chairman, Dr. Joseph Aremo, refuted the PDP’s allegations, asserting that the electoral body has been impartial and transparent. He stated, “The PDP has been involved in the entire process, including the submission of candidates and agents. Their withdrawal will not disrupt the election.”

Dr. Aremo assured that the elections would proceed as planned, with all necessary measures in place to ensure a seamless and peaceful exercise.

The local government elections in Ondo State are scheduled to hold on Saturday, January 18, 2025.
