Canada Bans US Firms from Govt Contracts, Cancels Elon Musk’s Starlink Deal Over Trump’s Tariffs

Premier Doug Ford announced the decision on Monday, blaming US President Donald Trump’s proposed 25% tariffs on Canadian imports.

“Ontario won’t do business with people hellbent on destroying our economy,” Ford said on X.

The cancelled Starlink contract, signed in November, was meant to provide internet access to 15,000 remote homes and businesses in northern Ontario starting in June.

Ontario’s liquor stores also began removing US-made beer, wine, and spirits from shelves, joining similar actions in Quebec, Nova Scotia, and British Columbia. The Liquor Control Board of Ontario, one of the world’s largest alcohol buyers, sells nearly Can$1 billion worth of US alcohol annually.

Trump discussed the tariffs with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau earlier on Monday and said further talks would follow.
