Brazil Announces Nigeria As BRICS Partner Country

According to the statement, BRICS and Nigeria share aligned interests in advancing cooperation among Global South nations and advocating for reforms in international organisations.

“With the world’s sixth-largest population—and Africa’s largest—Nigeria is a key player on the continent, boasting one of its strongest economies. Nigeria’s active role in fostering South-South cooperation and pushing for global governance reforms aligns with the priorities of BRICS during Brazil’s current presidency,” the statement noted.

Brazil assumed the presidency of BRICS on January 1, 2025, succeeding Russia.

Nigeria now joins Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan as the ninth partner country in the BRICS framework, a category that was introduced during the 16th BRICS Summit held in Kazan in October 2024.

This development further strengthens Nigeria’s global partnerships and underscores its commitment to fostering economic and political collaboration with emerging economies.
