The Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has passed on at the age of 91.
The revered monarch reportedly joined his ancestors on Sunday, a few hours after the announcement of the death of his close friend and former President, Muhammadu Buhari.
Oba Adetona ascended the throne on April 2, 1960, and reigned for over 64 years, making him one of Nigeria’s longest-serving traditional rulers.
His longstanding friendship with Buhari began in the 1980s and was marked by a remarkable episode in Nigeria’s political history.
In late 1983, the then civilian governor of Ogun State, Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, had signed a formal order for the dethronement of Oba Adetona, with effect from January 2, 1984.
However, the military coup led by Major General Muhammadu Buhari on December 31, 1983, disrupted the plan and ultimately saved the monarch’s throne.
The late monarch was widely respected for his wisdom, courage, and commitment to the development of Ijebuland and Nigeria at large.
Details of his burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the palace.
