By Lynda Oge

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has confirmed 11 persons dead in a road crash along Ovia River Bridge, Benin-Ore express way.

Mr Paul Okpe, FRSC Edo Sector Commander, told newsmen in an interview that eight persons were also injured in the accident which involved a truck and Toyota bus.

He said that both the injured and dead persons had been taken to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.

He said the cause of the accident was yet to be ascertained, urging motorists plying the state to imbibe road safety culture.

“We may not know the cause of the Road Traffic Crash (RTC), until a proper investigation is done.

“What I can tell you is that a trailer loaded with goods ran into a Toyota hummer bus and that led to the death of 11 persons on the bridge of Ovia river and eight persons were injured.

“We moved both the dead and injured persons to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital. We can not say what caused the accident, but I was there with my men for the rescue.

“The accident scene has been cleared. I have contacted our investigator and the Federal controller of works to look at the cause of the accident on the bridge across the Ovia river,”he said.

He urged road users to be careful on the roads as the Eld-el Kabir celebration continued, noting that most of the RTC in the state were caused by those passing through the state.

“As we celebrate the Sallah break, drivers should avoid speed and over loading and use of phone while driving,”he said.
