Army Confirms Explosion, Fire at Ijebu-Ode Barracks

Army spokesperson, Lt.-Col. Appolonia Anele, said in a statement that the explosion was localised within a storage building and led to a limited fire outbreak.

She said the fire was swiftly contained through the combined efforts of troops from the 12 Field Engineer Regiment and the Ijebu-Ode Fire Service.

“No lives were lost, and no injuries were recorded. Damage was limited to the affected building and some stored materials,” she said, adding that an assessment was ongoing to determine the extent of material loss.

Anele urged residents of Ilese and neighbouring communities to remain calm and continue their normal activities, assuring them that the Army, in collaboration with relevant agencies, had launched a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the incident and prevent a recurrence.

Earlier, a statement posted on X by a local authority source indicated that the explosion, which occurred at a mini store within the barracks, might have been caused by heat buildup, according to eyewitnesses.

The blast reportedly caused a loud bang that startled residents, sparking panic in the surrounding community.

The Army restated its commitment to the safety of its personnel and residents of neighbouring areas.
