Residents of Judges Estate in Alagbaka, Akure South Local Government Area, on Tuesday protested at the Ondo State headquarters of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) over poor power supply.
The protesters, led by the Judges Estate Landlords Association, accused BEDC of disconnecting their community from its original line, which they said previously provided up to 16 hours of electricity daily.
Association chairman, Prince Ade Adegboro, alleged that officials diverted their supply to a new line in Oda under the pretext of guaranteeing 24-hour electricity, but the estate had instead been thrown into darkness for about a week.
“We are here to demand reconnection to our original line. Since we were moved to Oda, we have been without power, while neighbouring estates still enjoy steady supply. For five days now, our homes and offices have been in total blackout,” he said.
He noted that several letters had been sent to BEDC offices in Benin and Lagos without any response.
Despite the protest, BEDC officials at the Akure office reportedly declined to address the residents, insisting they submit a fresh formal letter stating their grievances.
