The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has fired back at the Obidient Movement following its rejection of the coalition’s new directive, accusing the group of misrepresentation and bias.
Speaking in an interview, ADC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi said: “It is either that they did not read the story, or they have a pre-conceived position, because there was nowhere we compelled anybody to join the party. We just said that every member of the coalition must leave their original party. We have consistently maintained that Peter Obi and Nasir El-Rufai were given prerogatives, so I wonder where their outburst is coming from.”
He added that the comments from some Obidients should not be taken as Obi’s personal stance. “We do not even think that their position represents Peter Obi’s attitude or opinion towards the coalition.”
Other party leaders also weighed in. Dr Ladan Salihu, a member of the ADC publicity committee, stressed on Arise TV: “The fresh directive was not targeted at Obi or the Labour Party alone, but extended to all political heavyweights willing to join forces. We must face Nigerians with the assurance that we are the party that can give them the change they deserve.”
Lagos ADC chieftain Tai Benedict was more blunt, urging Obi to make up his mind. “Obidients can’t have it the way they had it in 2023. It will be difficult for Obi to be Nigerian president at the moment… Obi should come out bold enough to declare for ADC as a member.”
Similarly, Gombe ADC Chairman, Auwal Barde, warned: “It’s either Peter Obi and his followers are in or they are out. You can’t be dictating ADC from the back.”
