
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather outlook predicting widespread thunderstorms across the country from Sunday, April 21 to Tuesday, April 23.
In a bulletin released on Saturday in Abuja, NiMet indicated chances of localised thunderstorms over parts of Taraba, Adamawa and southern Kaduna States by Sunday afternoon and evening.
For the North Central, partly cloudy skies are expected in the morning, followed by isolated thunderstorms later in the day in areas including Plateau, the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Kwara, Niger and Kogi.
The southern region will experience cloudy skies in the morning, with likely thunderstorms over Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Delta States. By afternoon and evening, thunderstorms are expected to spread across Anambra, Oyo, Ondo, Edo, Imo, Abia, Ekiti and the coastal states.
Monday Outlook: NiMet forecasts sunny conditions over most northern states, though isolated thunderstorms may occur in Adamawa, Kaduna and Taraba later in the day.
In the North Central, isolated thunderstorms are expected by afternoon in Plateau, FCT, Benue, Kogi, Kwara and Nasarawa, while the South will see morning thunderstorms in Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Cross River, with more widespread storms expected later in the day across Ondo, Lagos, Bayelsa and others.
Tuesday Forecast: Sunny skies with few clouds are likely in the North during the morning hours, with isolated thunderstorms expected later in Taraba, Adamawa and Kaduna.
Parts of Benue and Kogi will likely see isolated thunderstorms later in the day, alongside Plateau, FCT, Kwara and Nasarawa. The South will remain mostly cloudy with chances of storms in Cross River, Akwa Ibom and Lagos in the morning, spreading to other parts including Abia, Imo, Anambra, Ekiti, Edo and Bayelsa by afternoon.
Public Health & Safety Advisory: NiMet advised Nigerians to stay in cool, well-ventilated areas and remain hydrated due to high temperatures in some parts of the country.
The agency also cautioned against exposure to extreme heat and urged preventive measures against heat-related illnesses and infections like meningitis. Residents are encouraged to avoid overcrowded spaces, use nose masks, and stay updated via NiMet’s official platforms.
Airline operators are advised to obtain detailed, airport-specific weather reports for proper flight planning.
