The Vice Chancellor of the newly established Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences (FUTES), Iyin Ekiti, Professor Gbenga Aribisala, has insisted that recruitment into the institution will be strictly merit-based, warning that knowing the Vice Chancellor, Registrar, or any official of the school will not guarantee employment.
Prof. Aribisala gave the assurance on Wednesday during the official handover of medical equipment donated by a member of the University Governing Council and Pioneer Provost of the College of Medicine, Afe Babalola University, Professor Oluwarotimi Sanya.
The donation, according to Prof. Sanya, was motivated by his desire to support the young university with basic medical tools needed at its health centre, especially as the institution prepares to commence academic activities in January 2026.
The items donated include ward screens, drip stands, weighing scales, manual and digital sphygmomanometers, digital and infrared thermometers, glucometers, glucose test strips, urine test strips, antiseptic lotion, methylated spirit, sterile gauze, cotton wool, lancets, and extra batteries.
The equipment was jointly received by the four principal officers of FUTES — the Vice Chancellor, Professor Gbenga Aribisala; the Registrar, Mr. Oluwole Dada; the Bursar, Mrs. Rachael Ajayi; and the University Librarian, Professor Isaac Busayo.
Speaking during the presentation, Professor Sanya noted that the items were the most basic tools every health facility needs, saying his five decades of medical experience had taught him the importance of providing basic diagnostic equipment for any health facility.
“I happen to know in my five decades of experience as a medical doctor, I have come to identify the most basic things that are needed in any hospital facility. As you can see, I brought basic equipment, like to measure blood pressure, to measure pulse rate, to measure temperature, to measure blood glucose, and do simple urinalysis and all that,” he said.
The Iyin-Ekiti born medical expert acknowledged that the university was still in its early stages of development and would require broad support from well-meaning individuals.
“I know the university is still struggling. It is still looking for funds and support. So, it won’t be out of place to lend a helping hand, no matter how little,” he added.
While receiving the items, an elated Professor Aribisala said the donation came at a crucial period as the institution continued to seek support from private individuals and corporate organizations.
He reaffirmed that FUTES will officially take off on January 5, 2026, adding that the institution still required several facilities to meet the standard of a world-class technology and environmental sciences university.
“I’m so excited, very, very happy, because what we have been asking for is for individuals and corporate organizations to support this University.
“This university will be taking off in next year, January 5th, and we still need a lot of things to do. So, receiving all this medical equipment from Professor Sanya who is a member of Council of the University, is so exciting and encouraging,” Professor Aribisala said.
Addressing concerns about ongoing recruitment, Professor Aribisala emphasized that recruitment will be strictly on merit without ” who you know” syndrome, adding that only qualified applicants would be engaged.
The Vice Chancellor explained that the university had already advertised its vacancies and conducted an online assessment for applicants, after which shortlisted candidates would proceed to an interview stage.
“Now, for those people who want to be recruited, what we have done is, we have advertised in the newspapers, because it is a federal university. Again, earlier this week, we asked them to write an exam. And not something too serious online. The same link with which you applied is the same link to write your exam. If you click on it, you see your question. And at your convenient time, even in the night, anytime, you can just answer those questions, because this is an ICT-based university. And those who now scale that level, they will now meet us at the interview. And then those who are top, then we will recruit them, ” he explained.
While appealing to the the well to do individuals in the society, Professor Aribisala emphasized that whatever items Donated by individuals, groups and c corporate organizations would be named after them.
