Early Morning, Late Evening Grazing Unhealthy For Livestock  — Expert Reveals

By Alice Davidson

Dr Salihu Isa, Veterinary officer in-charge of zone Four in Bauchi state, has identified early morning and late evening grazing practices as causes of seasonal diseases among livestock.

Isa, who stated this in an interview with in Bauchi, explained that animals consume parasites during such hours, therefore causing various ailments that could affect their well-being.

According to him, the clinical services in the zone, comprising  Ganguwa, Ningi and Warji local government areas in August alone, recorded 377 cases in Helminthosis, Septicemia and Ectoparasitism.

“The clinical services rendered in the three LGAs in August are mostly on disease associated with the rainy season.

“People into animal testing should understand that early morning and late evening grazing is not healthy for the animals because of the microorganism on the grass during such hours.

“In Ningi, we had 75, Warji, 35 and Ganjuwa, 45 cases of Helminthosis, while statistics for Septicemia showed that Ningi had 22, Warji 16 and Ganjuwa 19.

“For Ectoparasitism; Ningi had 74, Warji 35 and Ganjuwa 56,”he explained.

Isa appealed to animal rearers to consult veterinary clinics to collectively improve public health.

He said that animals could be protected against disease, if they abide by best health practices at all times.

Isa cautioned animal keepers on treating their animals at home to avoid more complications and infringing on the rights of animals to healthcare.
