Afrobeats singer and songwriter, Adekunle Gold, has disclosed that he once wrote a track for American superstar, Beyoncé, during one of the most painful periods of his life.
The award-winning artist explained that the song, Simile, was composed in 2019 shortly after the death of his father, at a time when he was struggling with grief.
“At the time, I was too consumed by grief to even think about music. But one day I forced myself back into the studio. Out of that pain, I wrote Simile,” Gold recounted.
He revealed that the track was sent to Beyoncé’s camp for possible inclusion in her Lion King: The Gift album project. However, he admitted that he secretly wished the song would not be selected because of the emotions attached to it.
“For years, the track remained unreleased until 2024, when my longtime collaborator, Michael, replayed it during a session. It reminded me that even in my deepest loss, I was not alone. I had God to lean on,” he said.
The singer, who recently released his new album titled Fuji, has now included Simile on the project, hoping it will offer solace to listeners experiencing grief or loss.
“Grief isn’t just about losing a parent. It can be the loss of a person, a friendship, a dream, or even a version of yourself; whatever it is, you don’t have to carry it alone,” he added.
