Expert Recommends Counselling Programmes For Happy, Sustainable Marriage

By Charles Abere

The home should be an encouraging and inviting environment for the growing girl-child and young women.

This will encourage high marital adjustment towards happiness in the home as they grow to become married employed women in the future.

This was part of the recommendations of the 78th Inaugural Lecturer of the Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti Ekiti State,by a Professor of Guidance and Counselling in the institution, Joyce Olufunke Ogunsanmi.

Speaking on the title: “That The Home Be Happy: Marital Adjustment And Economic Participation Of The Woman”, the don held that Community/Public Counselling Clinics/Centers be set up in communities in Nigeria by all levels of the Nigerian government. Adding that Professional Counsellors should be employed to provide information and render effective counseling services to individuals with marital concerns and other issues bordering on education, health and personal development.

She said every human being dreams of having a solid and happy home added that many go a long way and make great efforts to establish a strong and matured marriage. According to her, “to ensure good marital adjustment, the husband and wife see themselves as learners for life and each spouse contributes to the success and longevity of the relationship. Both spouses learn to accept a mistake or fault and  express apology and finally, see each other as being each other’s better choice”.

Stressing further, Professor Ogunsanmi explained that observations indicated that the institution of marriage has faced a lot of problems, including problems which arise from wife/spouse employment or labour participation outside the home. Saying since decades ago, yearly records of dissolution of marriages in the High Courts of Justice and Customary Courts in Nigeria, especially in Ekiti State have not been good news and that number of divorce cases granted at the courts has been a threat to the marriage institution.

The don posited that marriage enrichment programme should be regular in Community Counseling Clinics/Centres to encourage high marital adjustment between spouses in communities.
