Mental Problem is the Cause of Most Marriage Crises – Board

Deputy Commander-General of Hisbah, Mujahideen Aminudeen, said that the measure is aimed at reducing domestic violence and divorce by ensuring couples are mentally fit before marriage.

“We have realized that many of the problems we see in marriages today are linked to mental health. The test will help us know if both partners are truly ready to live together without harming one another,” he said.

He explained that during Hisbah’s marital counselling sessions, many women presented with anxiety and depression, adding that mental health stability is critical for a peaceful home.

Aminudeen also raised alarm over the use of alcohol and intoxicants, noting that Hisbah had uncovered cases of women selling them from their homes, which he said worsens mental health challenges.

“We already have a series of tests that are mandatory in the state before marriage, like genotype and sexually transmitted diseases. So adding a mental health evaluation will not be a stretch,” he said.

He added that the screening would also apply to divorcees whose remarriages are sponsored by the government.

The announcement follows a disturbing case in Farawa Quarters in May, where 18-year-old Saudat Jibril allegedly killed her husband, Salisu Idris, just nine days after their wedding.

Aminudeen further urged parents to investigate the character of suitors thoroughly before consenting to marriages.
