The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has rejected plans to enter into any coalition or merger ahead of the 2027 general elections.
This decision was announced in a communiqué issued by the PDP Governors’ Forum at the end of their closed-door meeting held in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Monday, April 14, 2025.
Reading the communiqué, the Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, stated that the PDP remains a major opposition party and will not be part of any coalition. However, the party remains open to individuals, groups, and parties that are willing to join it in the mission to rescue Nigeria and promote good governance.
“The Forum resolved that the PDP will not join any coalition or merger. However, as a major opposition party, it welcomes any party, persons, or groups willing to join it with a view to wrestling power and enthroning good leadership in 2027,” Mohammed said.
The Forum also addressed internal party matters, recommending that the Deputy National Secretary take over in an acting capacity, following the recent Supreme Court judgment affecting the position of the National Secretary. A substantive secretary is to be nominated from the South East geopolitical zone in line with party guidelines.
On national issues, the governors expressed serious concern over the growing insecurity in several states, particularly Borno, Katsina, Edo, and Plateau. The Forum called for a total review and restructuring of the country’s security architecture, advocating a more decentralised, bottom-up approach that empowers sub-national governments to take a leading role in ensuring safety.
The governors also declared their support for the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, and opposed any plan to declare a state of emergency in the state, urging a peaceful and constitutional resolution to the crisis.
Looking ahead, the PDP Governors’ Forum announced a national meeting scheduled for May 27, 2025, during which a Zoning Committee will be inaugurated. The party’s National Convention is set to take place from August 28 to 30, 2025, in Kano.
Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri was named Chairman of the Zoning Committee, while Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri will head the National Convention Committee.
