The Federal Government on Monday launched a digital portal aimed at creating a credible database of Nigerian teachers, streamlining licensing, and strengthening professionalism in the education sector.
The platform was unveiled in Abuja by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) in collaboration with the United Kingdom–funded Partnership for Learning for All in Nigeria (PLANE) programme.
Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, who performed the launch, described the initiative as a new chapter in teacher management in Nigeria.
“Today, we are not just unveiling a portal, we are opening a new chapter — one where technology, innovation, and efficiency drive teacher professionalism in our country,” she said.
Ahmad explained that the portal would simplify teacher registration and licensing, provide a transparent database of qualified professionals, ensure real-time access to professional development, and enhance accountability in the sector.
“In a digital age where nations compete through ideas, skills, and creativity, Nigeria cannot afford to be left behind. To build the future we desire, we must embrace 21st-century tools,” she added.
Senior Education Adviser at the British High Commission, Ian Attfield, said the UK government was proud to support the project, noting the importance of properly training and motivating teachers.
“There are many categories of teachers — community teachers, volunteers in faith-based schools, and those in low-cost private schools. Many are underqualified, and this diversity means systems must be integrated, smart, and motivating,” Attfield said.
He assured that the UK government, through the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, would continue to back Nigeria’s education reforms.
