
Dr. Doyin Abiola, a trailblazing journalist and former Managing Director of the defunct Concord Group of Newspapers, has died at the age of 82.
The veteran media executive, who was the wife of the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, reportedly passed away on Tuesday night.
Dr. Abiola made history in 1986 when she was appointed Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of National Concord, becoming the first Nigerian woman to head a national daily newspaper.
Her illustrious career in journalism spanned over three decades, during which she held several key roles and contributed significantly to media development in Nigeria.
A respected figure in the industry, she was a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Diamond Awards for Media Excellence (DAME), in recognition of her contribution to journalism and the advancement of democratic values.
She also served as the chairperson of the awards nominating panel at the maiden edition of the Nigerian Media Merit Award (NMMA).
Tributes have continued to pour in from media professionals and public figures who described Dr. Abiola as a pillar of the Nigerian press and a pioneer whose legacy paved the way for women in journalism.
