The Governor of Anambra State, Chukwuma Soludo has criticised politicians who promise to serve only one term in office, describing such declarations as irrational and insulting to the intelligence of the electorate.
The governor made the remarks during a political rally held in Anambra South in support of his second-term ambition.
Soludo questioned the logic of the one-term pledge, stressing that the Nigerian Constitution provides for two terms for elected public officeholders.
“How can anybody with a functioning brain say that? Do you think you’re speaking to fools? You come before people and declare, ‘I will only serve one term.’
“Any politician who says that should be taken to a psychiatric hospital. Something must be wrong with the person,” Soludo said.
His comments come weeks after former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, said he would be willing to serve only one term as president if that would help achieve equity in a coalition arrangement ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking during a live conversation on X with his supporters, Obi clarified that although he is open to coalition talks with like-minded individuals, he has not entered into any discussions regarding joint tickets with any politician, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
“I have not joined in any form of discussion on joint tickets, including with Atiku,” Obi said.
He added, “If there is any form of agreement that will restrict me to four years in office, I will comply with the agreement and be ready to leave office on the 28th of May, 2031—not the 29th, but the 28th.”
Soludo’s statement is seen by many as a veiled jab at Obi, who also hails from Anambra State.
