Nigeria’s Super Falcons have again made history, becoming the first African team to win the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) ten times.
The Nigerian ladies staged a remarkable comeback to defeat host nation Morocco 3-2 in a thrilling final played on Friday night in Rabat, Morocco.
The Falcons, who described their campaign as Mission X, looked out of sorts in the first half, trailing the North African side 2-0 at halftime.
However, the team turned the game around in the second half, displaying resilience and determination that have long defined their dominance on the continent.
Esther Okoronkwo began the comeback in the 64th minute with a calm finish that reduced the deficit to 2-1.
Moments later, Okoronkwo dribbled past two defenders and laid a perfect pass to Folashade Ijamilusi, who slotted in the equaliser to make it 2-2.
With just two minutes to the end of regulation time, substitute Jennifer Echegini fired home the winning goal from a rebound after Okoronkwo’s long-range freekick was parried into her path by the Moroccan goalkeeper.
The final whistle sparked wild celebrations as Nigeria sealed their place at the summit of African women’s football once again.
The Super Falcons have now won the WAFCON title 10 times, further cementing their reputation as the most successful women’s national team on the continent.
