The Federal Government has begun diplomatic discussions with the United States following its recent decision to limit non-immigrant visas for Nigerians to a single-entry valid for just three months.
This was disclosed in a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman, Kimiebi Ebienfa, who noted that the decision affects B1/B2 (business/tourism), F (student), and J (exchange visitor) visa categories.
Before now, qualified Nigerian applicants could receive U.S. visas valid for up to five years.
The U.S. said the new restriction is based on the principle of reciprocity. However, Nigeria expressed concern, saying the policy is not in line with equity and mutual respect.
Ebienfa stated: “The decision appears misaligned with the principles of reciprocity, equity, and mutual respect that should guide bilateral engagements between friendly nations.”
The Federal Government has called on the U.S. to reverse the policy while diplomatic efforts to resolve the matter are ongoing.
