The Temporary Administrator Making Permanent Decisions In Rivers State

By Kingsley Nwaeze

The expectations were simple: that the Akwa Ibom-born officer would assume the role of a stabilizing figure, an impartial peacemaker sent to guide the state through a turbulent political moment.

Regrettably, what has unfolded so far tells a different story.

Rather than exude humility or serve as a bridge between contending forces, Admiral Ibas appears to have approached the assignment with an air of finality, making bold, politically loaded decisions that suggest an ambition far beyond his temporary mandate.

His conduct in office, barely weeks into his assignment, has raised serious questions about motive, impartiality, and respect for democratic principles.

Of particular concern is his occupation of the main Government House in Port Harcourt just days after Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his family were compelled to hurriedly remove some personal belongings from the premises. It is a move that appears insensitive at best and deliberately provocative at worst.

This very Government House had only recently undergone extensive renovation, and Governor Fubara out of modesty or prudence, chose not to occupy it for more than a year, operating instead from the older Brick House.

To see a temporary administrator rush into that symbolic seat of power is troubling. It sends the wrong signal to the people of Rivers State and to Nigerians at large. It undermines the very purpose of a transitional caretaker administration, which is to manage, not to dominate or provoke.

The question must be asked: Is this about restoring peace, or about consolidating power? Is this an effort to stabilize Rivers State, or to create just enough chaos to justify an extension of emergency rule?

At a time when public trust in government is fragile, actions like these only fuel suspicion and resentment. They damage the credibility of the federal intervention and portray the administrator as a tool in a larger political game, rather than an impartial figure acting in the best interests of the state.

The people of Rivers State are not blind. They can see through actions that appear overreaching and politically motivated. They deserve a peacekeeper, not a power seeker. They expect accountabilitynot arrogance.

It is unfortunate, and frankly disappointing, that a respected military officer would allow himself to be seen as aiding what many believe to be an illegal imposition in a democratic space. The Nigeria of today should not accommodate actions that resemble the authoritarianism of our past.

Leadership, especially in moments of crisis must be marked by wisdom, tact, and self restraint. Anything else not only disrespects the spirit of the Constitution but also endangers the fragile peace and democratic gains the people have worked so hard to preserve.

The temporary nature of this assignment should not be forgotten. Power is fleeting, but the consequences of its misuse can be long lasting.
