The Kano State Government has reaffirmed that the Court of Appeal’s ruling on the emirship dispute remains valid, dismissing claims that it has been overturned.
Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Haruna Isa Dederi, clarified that the court’s recent decision to grant a stay of execution does not nullify its January 10, 2025 judgment, which upheld the repeal of the Kano Emirate Council Law, 2019, and reinstated Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano.
Speaking to journalists in Kano, Dederi explained that a stay of execution is a normal judicial process that ensures the status quo is maintained while the Supreme Court reviews the case.
Legal Battle Continues
The dispute arose from an appeal filed at the Supreme Court by Alhaji Aminu Baba Dan’Agundi, a strong supporter of the deposed 15th Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero. Despite the appeal, the government insists that Sanusi II remains the legally recognized Emir unless the Supreme Court decides otherwise.
“The judgment of the Court of Appeal is still standing. Only the Supreme Court can overturn it,” Dederi stated, urging the public to ignore misleading reports suggesting otherwise.
Call for Calm
The government expressed concerns over misinformation aimed at confusing residents and urged Kano people to remain peaceful and law-abiding.
Dederi assured that the state remains committed to due process and legal procedures, adding that the government’s legal team is carefully reviewing the latest developments.
The administration also reassured residents of its commitment to maintaining peace and stability as the legal proceedings continue.
