Impeached Lagos Speaker Obasa Claims Meranda Has Resigned

Obasa made this assertion on Thursday evening during an interview on Politics Today on Channels Television. He alleged that Meranda informed leaders of the Lagos All Progressives Congress (APC) during a meeting in Marina that she had stepped down.

Reacting to a question about the withdrawal of Meranda’s security aides while his own were restored, Obasa said, “When my security personnel were removed without my knowledge or consent, did I complain? There was a meeting in Marina with all the party leaders where Meranda openly stated that she had resigned. When you step down from an office, the paraphernalia of the position is naturally taken away.”

Obasa maintained that his removal by 36 out of the 40-member House was invalid.

“I have always said I was never removed from office. I am not against any removal, but if it must be done, it should follow the rules of the House. Impeachment is constitutional, but the process must adhere to the dictates of the Constitution,” he stated.

Earlier on Thursday, Obasa arrived at the Lagos State House of Assembly under heavy security and presided over a plenary session, reportedly attended by only four lawmakers.
