Tinubu’s Explosive Confession: Credits Babangida for His Political Journey

Speaking in Abuja on Thursday at the launch of a book in Babangida’s honour, Tinubu reminisced about a crucial moment during the former leader’s administration, when the inauguration of elected officials was repeatedly delayed.

Recalling an encounter at the International Conference Centre, Tinubu said: “One thing I will never forget: you knew we were elected, yet you kept postponing our inauguration. We were summoned to Abuja, and I sat there, convinced it wouldn’t happen again. Before we even returned to our hotel, it was locked—no key! Later, when I spoke, I confronted you, saying you had the opportunity to make history that day but didn’t seize it.”

He noted that while some expected him to face imprisonment for his remarks, Babangida instead came forward, shook his hand, and acknowledged his concerns—a moment Tinubu said he would never forget.

Beyond personal recollections, the President praised Babangida’s role in shaping Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly his commitment to involving young and intelligent minds in governance.

“General Babangida, without you, people like me wouldn’t be in politics. Your vision of a progressive and inclusive system inspired many of us,” Tinubu said.

While admitting he had yet to read the newly launched book, Tinubu assured that he would.

Babangida, who led Nigeria from 1985 to 1993, remains a significant figure in the country’s history, known for his economic and political reforms, as well as the controversies surrounding his administration, including the annulment of the 1993 presidential election.
